The idea for SAS Stay Well originated from a student’s desire to create a healthier, happier way for students to manage their mental health while at school.
Drawing from her own experiences, Gabby M. recognized the importance of having a safe space where students could feel supported, connect authentically, and take a break from the pressures of academics. Her initiative reflects a commitment to boosting social and emotional well-being within the Upper School community.
“Through SAS Stay well, they are using strategies to enhance their personal well-being through social connection, mindfulness, and it helps create a sense of belonging,” says Whitney Elliott, Grade 6 Core Lead and Wellness Lead at St. Anne’s.
Each Monday during the Upper School break, students are invited to drop by SAS Stay Well in the loft of Room 211, a cozy, inviting space complete with pillows, carpets, and a welcoming table. The activities differ from week to week and are designed to be heartfelt and calming, encouraging students to pause, relax, and engage with one another. From creative projects like hair tinsel and bracelet making to reflective moments such as writing warm fuzzies or mindful colouring, every session offers something special.
Gabby says that when slime-making was introduced, it proved so popular that a waitlist formed for the following week. The nostalgic joy of playing with slime sparked laughter and conversation, and with hands occupied, devices were set aside, creating an environment of genuine connection.
As one Grade 11 student shared, “SAS Stay Well helped me relieve my stress and shifted my focus from studying to relaxing, while being in a mindful and supportive space.”
Gabby’s leadership and creativity grew a simple idea into a meaningful program that promotes wellness, belonging, and community, one mindful Monday at a time.
