St. Anne’s School: Making History
The First Cygnets of St. Anne’s School have taken flight! September 2022 has been a uniquely exciting time of firsts: first New Family Welcome Day, first Fall Flight trip, first classes in the Cygnets Centre, first athletic teams, first robotics and coding, first Terry Fox run, and first partnered co-curricular with St. Andrew’s College.
The list will grow as we continue to make history and build the foundation of SAS. Observing the students’ positive interactions, risk-taking, eagerness, and personal development in such a brief period has been inspiring.
The First Cygnets (a cygnet is a young swan) are a core of Grade 9 students who will play a significant role in shaping the culture of St. Anne’s. When we talk about the founding of St. Anne’s 100 years from now, we will speak of these incredible students, their defining moments, and their connection to the development of the school’s founding mission, principles, and values.
This inaugural class is temporarily situated at St. Andrew’s College in the Cygnets Centre, a separate teaching and learning commons. Its proximity to SAC allows for easy access to state-of-the-art facilities. The unique partnership between a school for boys and a school for girls provides opportunities for authentic integration, destabilizes gender stereotypes, provides substantive social opportunities, develops comfort in mixed-gender social settings, and creates authentic work environments.
The Cygnets Centre is a unique space, complete with eight classrooms, an art studio, student and teacher lounges, and a locker and change room facility. It is an ideal setting for the Grade 9 girls to fulfill their academic, athletic, co-curricular, and leadership passions.
In the meantime, work continues renovating the SAS campus, just a kilometre from the SAC campus. It was originally built and owned by past SAC parents, Anne and Andrew Dunin. Notably, the colours in the Dunin coat of arms align nicely with the St. Andrew’s logo and crest, ensuring a long-lasting connection between the two schools. The oak leaves that serve as the swan’s wings ready to take flight are not only part of the Dunin coat of arms; they are a nod to the beautiful oak trees prominent on the school grounds. The powerful swan is the centrepiece of the logo, a symbol of peace, tranquillity, loyalty, strength, grace, artistry, and beauty.
St. Anne’s School is currently registering for Grades 5 to 10 for the 2023-2024 school year.
