Inspiring Citizenship

Fostering Respect, Leadership, & Compassion for a Pluralistic Society

We cultivate a positive culture of leadership, stewardship, advocacy, belonging, and inclusion. By providing students with the foundation for empowered citizenship, we work to ensure that every student has the confidence, wisdom, and compassion to contribute to a pluralistic society.

Our Vision for Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders

Build a Strong Sense of Belonging:

Through intentional programming and reflective practices, cultivate an environment where students are encouraged to explore their inner selves, recognize their strengths, identify areas for growth, and embrace their unique identities. We instill a culture of empathy, respect, and appreciation for the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of others within our community. Focusing on self-awareness and respect for others enhances personal growth and builds the foundation for a sisterhood of compassion.

Model Courageous Conversations:

Model brave, intentional conversations that demand reflection and accountability through community gatherings, advisory, and appropriate course curricula. We tackle difficult topics head-on, using them as opportunities for growth and understanding. By modelling how to engage in these conversations with honesty and respect, every voice is heard, and real change begins. These discussions are essential for developing leaders prepared to confront and address challenging social issues.

Develop Transformational Leaders:

Design and implement diverse leadership opportunities to allow for transformational leaders who drive change, intentional stewards who make thoughtful decisions, and informed advocates who work toward building an inclusive community where every student belongs. We cultivate an environment where relationships are paramount, diversity is celebrated, and students can be their authentic selves.

Promote Community Engagement:

Integrate real-world experiences, partnerships with local organizations, and opportunities for community service into the daily program, ensuring students understand the complexities of social issues and actively participate in addressing them. By fostering a sense of responsibility and agency, we prepare students to take on leadership roles in their communities to make a positive impact.

Collaborative Citizenship Programming:

Our citizenship programming is at the core of our commitment to developing socially responsible and engaged global citizens. By integrating complementary citizenship initiatives across St. Anne’s and St. Andrew’s, we offer students opportunities to participate in meaningful, impactful activities beyond the classroom. Our approach ensures every student finds their unique path and is equipped to pursue it with conviction, making a difference in their lives and the lives of others.

Tactics

  • Develop a comprehensive student leadership program aligned with the Portrait of a Cygnet that integrates community service, character education, and civic education. This program will include mentorship with community leaders, social justice initiatives, global excursions, environmental stewardship projects, outdoor education, financial literacy, and active participation in school governance, all aimed at fostering responsibility, empathy, and a commitment to global and local citizenship.
  • Ensure policies, programming, and culture reflect the diversity of our community.
  • Research and identify the knowledge, skills, and habits of mind to foster authentic citizenship, leadership, and a strong community of sisterhood, focusing on social-emotional learning, character development, and pluralism.
