At. St. Anne’s School, we are pleased to offer students the opportunity to challenge themselves through the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) program. Students who take an AP course take a university-level examination predicated on an enriched and accelerated curriculum. The AP program allows students to pursue extension in areas of passion and their interests while working toward their post-secondary goals.
The AP program is the most widely recognized university preparatory program in the world. The program operates in over 125 countries, with over 1.85 million students writing over 3.2 million exams annually. Over 4,000 universities accept AP credits worldwide, and every Canadian university is a member of the College Board. Additionally, more than 30% of colleges and universities look at AP experience when determining scholarships and more than 80% report that a student’s AP experience favourably impacts admission decisions. Canadian students consistently earn the highest AP scores in the world, with 75% of examinees earning a score of 3 or higher compared to the international average of 59%.
A recent survey of Canadian students in their second year of university found that:
- 93% of students who take at least one AP course significantly reduce the stress of the first year of university
- 94% of students said that AP gave them an advantage over their peers in the same class
- 98% of students said they would take AP again in high school if given the chance
- 99% of students St. Anne’s students scored a 3 or higher.
St. Anne’s School is also proud to be an AP Capstone school. AP Capstone is a two-year interdisciplinary diploma program that focuses on developing students’ skills in research, analysis, evidence-based argumentation, collaboration, academic writing, and oral presentation.
This program offers both academic distinction for students and the ability for students to engage in student-centred learning based on their interests and post-secondary goals.
AP Capstone has been found to be a powerful indicator for post-secondary readiness: AP Capstone graduates not only have significantly higher first-year grades and retention but also have a higher probability of participating in academic research, internships, and honours programs (College Board, 2019).
